March 22, 1997 - In response to a series of incidents of racial graffiti against Asian American owned shops in San Franciscos Sunset District in February, Supervisor Mabel Teng organized a community-wide event to publicly condemn these acts of vandalism. With the assistance of the police and the participation of several hundred Bay Area residents, graffiti and garbage along some 20-odd blocks of Irving Street was enthusiastically cleaned up with brooms, brushes, and more than a little bit of elbow grease. |
| Bank of the Orient, a recent addition to the Sunset District with the opening of its new branch at the corner of Irving Street and 21st Avenue, was at the center of the excitement that day. The Bank provided the crowd of early morning volunteers with coffee and pastries to fuel their clean-up efforts. In addition, the Bank was the site of a traditional Chinese Lion Dance performed by the SF Police Department Lion Dance Team. The dance was meant to drive out any evil spirits in the area. | ![]() |
